At Sunflower Journey, we believe that a service dog is more than a working companion. They are a partner who can provide independence, confidence, and life changing support to someone living with a disability. Unfortunately, the financial cost of obtaining a fully trained service dog can put that opportunity out of reach for many individuals who need one.

 

Our Service Dog Program was created with the hope of helping bridge that gap.

Through our program, we carefully select, raise, and train dogs from their earliest foundations through advanced skills and reliable service work. Each dog receives individualized training that includes obedience, socialization, public access, and disability related tasks tailored to their future handler's needs. We prioritize the dog's well being, temperament, and development throughout the process, ensuring that every step is guided by patience, compassion, and trust.

 

Training a service dog is a significant commitment. Depending on the individual dog and their future responsibilities, the journey can take approximately 18–24 months or longer. Throughout that time, we are responsible for their daily care, health, enrichment, equipment, and professional training.

Even before training begins, there is a financial investment in finding the right candidate. Adoption fees for shelter and rescue dogs typically range from $150 to $300, while puppies from ethical, responsible breeders can cost $3,000 to $4,500. Regardless of where a dog comes from, each candidate must be carefully evaluated for their temperament, health, and suitability for service work.

 

The cost of a fully trained program dog can range from $20,000 to $45,000, depending on the dog's individual needs, training requirements, and the length of their program. While this reflects the extensive time, resources, and dedication involved, we recognize that these costs can be an enormous barrier for disabled individuals.

Donations to our Service Dog Program Fundraiser will help cover expenses such as:

• Acquiring program dogs: Adoption fees from shelters and rescues or the purchase of carefully selected puppies from ethical breeders.

• Food and daily care: Nutritious meals, training treats, grooming, and everyday necessities.

• Veterinary expenses: Routine examinations, vaccinations, preventative care, and unexpected medical needs.

• Health testing: Orthopedic evaluations, X-rays, and other health screenings to ensure dogs are physically suited for their intended work.

• Training and equipment: Leashes, harnesses, service dog gear, enrichment supplies, and the resources needed throughout their training.

• Real-world experiences: Public access outings, socialization opportunities, and confidence building activities.

• Ongoing program expenses: The time, care, and resources necessary to raise and train each dog from their earliest foundations through reliable service work.

 

By helping offset these expenses, donations allow us to work toward reducing the financial burden placed on the handlers who will eventually be partnered with our dogs.
